One day while visiting our local tractor supply store, my son asked me this question. Now here in our small town everyone knows that we love our kids a little more than they do in other towns. Why, every year we have a music gathering called Bonnaroo. People from all over the United States come to our town to listen to bands that I've never even heard of. When they show up with illegal drugs, we in law enforcement, collect fines. We like to think of this as, collecting money for our kids, so you can see that we might love our kids a little more than others do. Every year the tractor supply store gets in shipments of baby ducks and baby chicks. The store knows what this does to a little three year old boy, so instead of putting them in the storage room they display them right out in the open. As my luck goes, the items I needed were right next to the display of baby chicks. The war was on between dad and son. For the rest of the time in the store all I heard was how cute them baby chicks were. I finally made it to the checkout line when it happened. My son looks up at me with them sad eyes and in the sweetest voice you ever heard said, "Daddy, don't you love me"? With everyone looking at me and waiting for my response, I said of coarse I do why? He said, "If you love me, then why won't you get me a baby chicken". At this point my face must have turned beet red because I was getting some strange looks from the other customers and the checkout clerk. I had to tell him, under my breath, that we would discuss this when we got in the truck. I guess that in his mind by discuss, I meant that we would negotiate a deal and he would wind up with that baby chick. When we got to the truck he asked about the chick again and I told him that there wasn't any way he was getting a chicken after he embarrassed me like he did in the store. He told me that when we got home he was going to tell his momma on me and I'd be in trouble. I explained to him that his momma would agree with me and that she wouldn't get mad. He thought for a minute and came up with this idea. He said when we get home will you call maw maw for me. I asked him why he wanted to talk to her and he said that he was going to tell on me for not getting him the baby chick and that she was my momma so I would get in trouble. I told him that when we got home I would call her and he could tell on me but he also needed to tell her that when he got off of the phone he would be getting a spanking. That ended our conversation on baby chickens. I guess I showed him who the boss is....oops, I got to go, I forgot to feed the chickens.
