Larry Lilly's Letter Monday March 1, 2010

I love to experience March. March often has all the weather elements of the entire year wrapped into one month. I really get into the foreshadowing of summer. I am the incarnation of "Lazy Bones" sleeping in the warm sun of summer. I could care less about cornmeal.

March also reminds me that life, when pressed against eternity is shorter than we realize, and thus it is wise to get on with living purposeful lives.

An old adage posits "You are what you have been becoming." The choices you made years ago are working their benefit in you. Or you are, as Stevenson said, "sitting down to a plate of consequences." Mike DeWine expressed it thusly:

"On every journey you take, you are met with options. At every fork in the road, you make a choice. These are the decisions that shape your life."

Most people my age know that choices come dressed in different garments and making the right one demands many other choices. Choosing to pray, to search scripture for insight into the current fork in the path, along with patiently waiting, listening for the still small voice stating in Isaiah 30:21: “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." Or if we are really in tune, the mere fluctuation of the eye of Him who said He would guide us and stating it graphically, "I will guide thee with mine eye." Psa. 32:8

At a critical time in the early days of Israel conquering the Promised Land, Joshua told it like it is: Joshua 24:15:

"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

Joshua made the Master choice and it follows that other choices must be made in harmony with the Master/template choice. This leads to a life of balance and balance is essential in a crazy unbalanced world. The choice to follow the Lord is the controlling one and all further choices must be made to compliment the initial Master Choice.
