What is so special about the Mona Lisa? I’ve been exposed to a fair amount of art through the years, and my responses have varied from “That’s art? Any kindergartener can do that!” to total amazement. The Mona Lisa is good…is it great? She’s certainly not one of DaVinci’s better works. So why is she so famous? I think she is famous because she is the work of a great master. Not that the work itself is so great, but rather, the Mona Lisa is part of a great collection from a great artist. What motivates an artist to create anything? The work brings pleasure to the creator.
I often find myself thinking similar thoughts about myself. I do not have any exceptional abilities. I’m nothing special to look at. I’m not wealthy. I’m just a truck driver. So, why does God see fit to draw me into Him? Why did He send Jesus to die for me? What makes me good enough? What makes me acceptable? It is because I am a part of His work. I am His creation. I am created to please Him. Whatever role I have played in the past, or whatever it is He will have me do in the future, it will be for and at His pleasure. I must learn to say “Here I am.” I must get over the feeling that I am not good enough, that I am not worthy for His service. His Grace makes me good enough; the blood of Christ makes me acceptable. Not because of anything I am, have done, or will ever do.
Ephesians 2:4-10 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Revelation 4:11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
I often feel moved to work in areas that are outside of what few talents I have. Considering what Christ has done for me, the least I can do is say, “Here I am, send me.” Who am I to say that the Creator doesn’t know how to use His own creation? I exist for and by His pleasure.
