FOLLOWING JESUS
THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES SENSE
Jesus said, "for what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
An atheist once approached D.L. Moody with the statement that he believed that death ended all. Moody agreed, however his response to the atheist was profound. Although my memory does not allow me to recall everything he said, it went something like this: Yes indeed death ends all your opportunities to show and receive Love; It destroys all your hopes for the future; it removes all possibilities of correcting all of your past mistakes; it obstructs any possibility in your life to receive blessing from God and share with others; It Keeps you from turning from your sin and receiving the gift of eternal life as you enter the blackness and darkness forever.
This is not true for the Christian. All the blessings that Christ promises us will eventually be ours. But turning to a more important truth, I ask, how is the blessing that you are receiving affecting others? As you look back on your life, what have you given to your world that has eternal value?
I recall a story I read one time about a rich man dying and going to heaven. As he followed the angel down those Golden streets He noticed the beautiful mansions aligning them. As he journeyed on he kept asking which one was his. Finally at the end of the road, they came to a tumbled down shack just barely held together with twigs. He replied to the angel. "Is that all I get?' The angel replied, "That's all we could do with the materials you sent ahead."
The story illustrates perfectly that life is a stewardship lent to us by God. What's in it for me" is not a Christian philosophy. If we spend all of our lives thinking that way we also will wind up as this rich pauper. God did not give us this life to live selfishly.
Lately the thought has possessed me about some of my friends who are unsaved about to go into eternity without Christ. As I look back on the past I can see many areas that I could have done better. What concerns me is, what am I doing today with the life and the opportunities that exist?. Do I love my unsaved friends? Better yet do I have any?
We do not know how long our life will be, but we can determine to be faithful in our devotion to Christ and to our friends with whatever life we have left.
At end of my life there are only to things I want. first to hear Jesus say "Well done thou good an faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Lord." To hear him say that to me is my greatest hope. Second, perhaps some of those friends of mine who continually rejected Christ's offer of salvation might finally make it by God's grace. That will be worth it all for me.
