Moses flees to Midian
I’ve always seen Moses portrayed as a strong, robust man. In my mind, he is a fearless and courageous man. Moses was also afraid just like we become at times, Exodus 3:14- Then Moses was afraid..
Moses saw a fellow Hebrew being beaten. Moses killed the man that abused the Hebrew slave. Pharaoh sought to kill Moses and Moses fled to Midian.
Moses spent the next forty years there. Forty years is a long time. You can read about his life there in Exodus chapter 3. He began a new life. He married Zipporah [ the daughter of a priest[ Jethro] ] and fathered two sons.
God was preparing Moses for his next phase of life. God did not abandon Moses. Mose's father-in-law saw all that God had done for Moses, Exodus 18:1 When Jethro the priest of Midian, Mose's father-in-law heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.., [this was after Moses returned to Egypt after 40 years of living in Midian], so God was at work in his life the whole time. Can you imagine the changes he must have faced living in a new city and meeting new people? Adapting to all those changes must not have been easy. Beginning again is never easy. Have you ever moved to a new apartment or home? When I moved a few months ago, I met new people, shopped at new stores, and had to adjust to living in a different place with a new routine. Moving is difficult. The older one is, the more difficult that changes are. Moses was 40 years old when he fled to Midian and began his new life.
Now, a bit about his living conditions, scripture tells us that in midian there was a desert, Exodus 3:1a- he led the flock to the backside of the desert. The desert is a hot, dry and occasionally dusty dwelling place. There were no air conditioners back then. No electric fans to catch a cool breeze. Mose's profession was now that of a shepherd. Tending sheep is no easy task.
There are some good points to this story:
1. God still had plans for Mose's life. Moses had new wife, sons and father-in-law in Midian. When the 40 years of living in Midian expired, God spoke to Moses about his future plans for him in the burning bush Exodus 3:2-There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within the bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.
2. God used Moses at the age of 80 years up until his death at age 120. He was not too old for God to use his life for the glory of God.
3. God is no respector of persons Romans 2:11 for there is no respect of persons with God. If God could use Moses after all he had been through, he can do it for you and for me. No one is ever too old, too young, too disabled or too bad for God to use. God has plans for everyone.
Application: Have you ever felt like you weren’t good enough, made too many mistakes or that God only used the saints of old? Well, remember how God used Moses during his 40 years and afterwards as well. Proverbs 16:9 A man deviseth his way but the LORD directeth his steps. Just as God directed Moses to Midian and later back to Egypt, God leads us as well.
Prayer: Lord, help us remember when we are down or have been through much suffering or through changes that you are with us and still have plans for our lives, In Jesus name, Amen.
