“Eagles and Chickens”

During a recent conversation with one of my “church sisters” we began talking about the differences in people…’Christians’. Why it is that children of the Most High God can allow themselves to get broken down by the weight of the World, and just go through life…day in, and day out with their souls cast down….just trudging along, existing, never really realizing who they are or who’s they are, and thusly never having walked in the fullness of life that is promised to us?
I have come to believe that there are two types of people….Eagles and Chickens.
Eagles and Chicken’s…there’s a distinct difference in the behavior patterns of these two animals, yet there are some similarities. They both are called fowls or birds, they both have feathers, they both have claws, and they both come from eggs.
But the similarities end there. They are of the same family, but they have different destinies. The Chicken is destined to end up on somebody’s plate, with a side of rice and gravy. The Eagle is destined to soar in the heavens, looking down from lofty heights.
Have you ever noticed how Chickens live? You can always find Chickens running around in the yard, scratching in the dust; looking for something to eat. Looking for left over’s, looking for something somebody has thrown away. Looking, and scratching, scratching and looking….I bet if you could ask a Chicken what he was looking for, it would tell you…anything…looking for just anything! Clucking and scratching.
But you will never see an Eagle scratching in anybody’s yard. It is said that an eagle won’t eat anything that is already dead. If he doesn’t kill it himself, he won’t eat it…no hand me outs for the Eagle. Old and stale just won’t do.
You can always find a Chicken with other Chickens, they live together, they travel together, and they raise their young together. But you will never find an Eagle chillin with other Eagles. When the time comes for their young to grow up, and get out of the nest, an Eagle will kick their young out…sink or swim!
I heard my pastor say one time, that what happens in the physical is parallel to the spiritual.
Some people you meet know who they are in Christ. You will find them about being about their Father’s business, others will never know who they are or who’s they are, they will go through this life, just trudging along as if the whole weight of the world was upon their shoulders. They are defeated in their homes, at work, their children are acting up, their spouses are missing in action…and they act as if they just can’t do any better…but the devil is a liar! Didn’t Jesus say in John 10:10 that He came so that we might have life, and not just any ole life, but a life of abundance?
If we then realize that we are the Children of God, that we were created just a little lower than the angles, that the cattle on a thousand hills belongs to our Father, then we predestined for greatness…
At the beginning of time, when God made the world…after preparing everything perfectly for our occupancy, He then knelt down in the dust of the earth and created us….mankind…and after seeing what He had created, He stamped it with His mark of approval and pronounced us “Good!” But somehow between then and know we have gotten things all twisted up…we have allowed the enemy to lie to us, to deceive us into thinking we are what people say we are! We allow ourselves to believe we are an inferior race, an inferior people, who are ment to survive on the hand-me-downs of the world! The Bible says that God would never see His seed begging for bread…He says that He would never leave us, or forsake us, that He would supply ALL our needs.
Yet our Jails are filled to overflowing, our schools are producing and graduating, young men and women who can’t read, write and don’t know the square root of 8. The number of un-wed mothers, the number of Back people infected with HIV/Aids, the number of our people un-employed has sky rocketed in the last thirty years…is this the dream that Martin, Harriet and Fredrick had for us as a people? Is this the destiny God created for us?
The story is told that “Once upon a time, there was a large mountainside, where an eagle’s nest rested. The eagle’s nest contained four large eagle eggs. One day an earthquake rocked the mountain causing one of the eggs to roll down the mountain, to a chicken farm, located in the valley below. The chickens knew that they must protect and care for the eagle’s egg, so an old hen volunteered to nurture and raise the large egg.

One day, the egg hatched and a beautiful eagle was born. Sadly, however, the eagle was raised to be a chicken. Soon, the eagle believed he was nothing more than a chicken. The eagle loved his home and family, but his spirit cried out for more. While playing a game on the farm one day, the eagle looked to the skies above and noticed a group of mighty eagles soaring in the skies. "Oh," the eagle cried, "I wish I could soar like those birds."

The chickens roared with laughter, "You cannot soar with those birds. You are a chicken and chickens do not soar."

The eagle continued staring, at his real family up above, dreaming that he could be with them. Each time the eagle would let his dreams be known, he was told it couldn’t be done.

That is what the eagle learned to believe. The eagle, after time, stopped dreaming and continued to live his life like a chicken. Finally, after a long life as a chicken, the eagle passed away.

The moral of the story: You become what you believe you are; so if you ever dream to become an eagle follow your dreams, not the words of a chicken.
