"The commandment is a lamp; and the law is light" (Proverbs 6:23-24, KJV).

Jacob surely warned his son, Joseph: “Flee fornication, my son. Watch out for strange women.” Perhaps he added, “Remember your sister, Dinah and all the trouble she caused, even endangering our lives.”

Jacob's commandment lit up the paths of Joseph as a young man. His brothers hated him, threatened to kill him, and sold him into slavery. The slave-traders brought him down into Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, an Egyptian. One day his master journeyed away from home leaving his trusted servant, Joseph, in charge.

While Potiphar was away, Joseph entered the house to discharge his duties. The other men servants' duties took them out of the house. Potiphar's wife tempted him, saying, "Lie with me." Joseph fled from the house, leaving his outer garment in this woman's hand.

When Potiphar returned home, this deceitful woman showed him Joseph's coat. Then she said, "Joseph came in to force me. I cried out, and he fled."

Potiphar believed his wife and threw Joseph into prison. God knew of Joseph's innocence and He caused the prison keeper to treat him well. This man appointed Joseph overseer over all the other prisoners.

His father's commandment, “Flee fornication,” became a light, which scattered the darkness of sin. He obeyed and escaped from the clutches of an adulterous woman. Because he kept right on trusting God even in prison, God blessed him.

When men brought him before the king, a bad dream troubled him. Joseph told him, “There’ll be seven years of plenty, followed by seven years of famine. Lay up for the years of famine.” The king liked his wise choice. He made him a ruler next to himself.

Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt. He forgave his brothers for their great sin. He said to them, “You did not send me to Egypt, but God did....Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive” (Gen. 45:7; 50:20).

When we obey God, His commandment gives us light, too, to deliver us from the ways of evil. He will bless our lives, even when others seek to hurt us.

Dear God, help me to obey Thee when I am tempted to do wrong. Deliver me from evil. In Jesus' name. Amen.
