Larry Lilly's Letter Monday February 8, 2010

I read one of the most insightful pieces on communication I have ever read last Wednesday in the Washington Post and I have studied the art most of my life.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/04/AR2007040401721.html

Did you notice the line from poet Billy Collins? Note my revised version:

"All babies are born with a knowledge of poetry, because the lub-dub of the mother's heart is in iambic meter. Then life slowly starts to choke the poetry out of us. It may be true with music, too."

I believe an inner fear in many humans is a result of life beating the poem/song out during the ebb and flow of living. The inner fear is expressed in the phrase, "Dying with our song unsung."

People who have heard my version of Luciano Pavarotti sincerely utter a prayer that I will die prior to another line. We each seem to feel deep inside that we do have a song, a poem, even a novel. Yet we lose the meter of life along the way. When this happens living takes on a tragic tone and all sorts of problems rise to choke the poetry and music out of our life.

In a relationship with Christ the opposite happens and this restoration is expressed in a popular Christian song titled, "Wonderful, Wonderful Jesus." The chorus in part states: "Wonderful, wonderful Jesus in the heart He implanteth a song."

The Bible speaks of joy and singing as the natural expression of the Lord's people. When Israel was held captive in Babylon one of her laments was "How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?" Yet the Lord gave them a song for that strange place.

Job, the man more than just acquainted with grief stated:

Job 35:10: But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;

God through faith in Christ restores the natural song in our life. Our very life is said to be His workmanship, His Poiema, His masterpiece. A Christian is the poem, the song of Jesus in concert.
