“The Night God Sang”
02/21/2004
By: Lisa Velez
I was scheduled to sing the solo during my church’s evening service two Sundays ago. Let me just say, that I was a little freaked about singing because my sinuses were acting up, as per usual.
As I practiced in the car, my voice was cracking during the higher notes. Again, my voice did the same thing during sound check that same evening. I was afraid that I would mess the song up for sure and that I wouldn’t be able to do it.
Service was to begin at its usual time on Sunday evenings, at around 6:30pm. I started thinking about all the people I had asked to “pray for me” that night. Then, it occurred to me, even more so than before. God reminded me that I always ask others to pray for me, yet I doubt the results. The bad thing is that I usually spend so much time coveting other people’s prayers instead of sending some up to Heaven myself. God so moved me to kneel before His throne and pray for my voice that night. I kneeled in front of the altar; I kneeled on the step in front of my seat, etc. The only thing different about my prayers this time was that I was more confident and lacked the usual doubts that flowed through my mind at most other times during prayer.
As I walked up to the altar to sing, I felt a wee bit anxious, but I was pretty much at peace about it. I wasn’t sure if my voice would crack, but I knew somehow, with the Lord’s help, I could do it.
As the climax of the song approached and the notes were beginning to reach their higher ranges, I felt the Lord take a hold of my voice in such a way that I knew He was singing through me to touch others. The song was sung flawlessly, without a sour note or crack to be heard. Well, I knew right away that this success had nothing to do with me whatsoever. God wanted His voice to be heard and so chose to sing His love song through me. What an honor to be used by such an awesome Father, when we are not even worthy to stand before Him!
I will never forget that night for as long as I live. Not only because the song was sung well, but also because it wasn’t me who was doing the singing. Because of my God’s great love for me, He chose to strengthen my faith by doing so.
I was reminded that there is always hope as long as we hold on to Jesus. He never lets us down. And even though life’s song(s) may hit a few sour notes once in a while, if they’re all sung from the heart, then they are bound to touch a heart that needs to be blessed.
What a faithful God we serve. I will sing His praises forever…even when I feel afraid, for I know He will comfort me and give me the strength to carry on in His name.
