Poetry
(unlike a good potato)
is hard to find these days
but then
potatoes have the luxury
of being coddled in the embryo of
the earth's paternal embrace
tomatoes know no such
extravagance
subjected to our chafing
expectations
they are given no time
to mature
they're plucked way too soon
and callously shipped off to
to have their crunchy, pale
flesh passively appreciated
by those of us who think
a cardboard condiment is
better than no condiment at all
who can wait until
the fruit is matured?
who has time for that
anymore?

There is no taste to compare with a 'vine-ripened' tomato. It has been a long time...60-70 years since I tasted a garden fresh tomato. I remember well visiting with grammer schoolmates on their folks farms where you could always find fresh tomatoes on the window sill in the kitchen which became our after school snack...ummmm!!!so good. Thanks for the reminder.
