Psalm 119.11

Purpose of the promise

“Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You.” [Psalm 119.11 NASB]

One of the many benevolent acts of God that bring continual comfort, encouragement and frequently repeated outbursts of hope to His persecuted people, is the fact that, regardless of the perplexing situations they often face and the multiple machinations of the enemy, God often talks to His people about their place in the battle, what has taken place and what they can expect to happen. We have frequently tasted and proven the truth that we can fully depend on what He says, for our Commander-in-Chief is fully conversant with our situations.

David, like the merchant who found the pearl of great price in [Matthew 13.44], had securely deposited God’s promise of protection in a safe place.

Why did he do that? There was, in David’s inner man a spiritual hunger, which he desperately needed to have satisfied. He not only wanted to memorize the word, he also wanted to minister the same to fellow saints; therefore he had trained his inner self to seek after God at all times, and the spring of all his subsequent spiritual actions was the revealed word of the Lord.

David was also aware that in some ways he was spiritually weak and vulnerable and one of the sources of his inner strength was the word of the Lord. David may have needed divine assistance to overcome a besetting sin or to put a particular sin to death once and for all.

Are you facing a particular conflict today in which you need to hear and wholly depend on the word of the Lord?

Stand firm. You are not alone. God knew exactly from before the Creation of the world what you would need at this time and He has prepared an adequate answer with you in mind.

Therefore rest in and rely on the Lord and when He speaks, hold onto it. Like the pillar of fire during the wilderness wanderings, God's word will continually guide you in the way you should go, until you receive the fulfillment of His promise.
