Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday January 20, 2010

As I have walked with the Lord the days have become weeks and weeks years now piling up decades. It is a good walk along a multi-faceted scene. It is an interesting trip if not necessarily an idyllic vacation.

Sometimes I reach a point of thinking "My life is simply moving from wanting to scream to began screaming and never stopping." Keep in mind I do not suffer from any life threatening disease other than the one Adam brought on. I have three precious dogs. I have a good family, topped off with a girl I call The Great blonde who assures me were I to write about her more often it is very possible my writings would hit some pretty big best seller lists. Nothing really big sets me in the scream mode, but the little things, the little foxes to use Solomon's phrase brings on this near uncontrollable outrage.

As I read through the Book of Revelation a verse jumped off the page and helped me to get things back in perspective. I had been thinking, "I really need a month off, away from everything and everybody."

Coupled with the jumping verse from John's Patmos prose is this little note from Emperor Marcus Aurelius in his "Meditations."

"People seek retreats for themselves in the country, by the sea, and near the mountains, and you too are especially prone to desire such things. But this is a sign of ignorance, since you have the power to retire within yourself whenever you wish. For nowhere can a person retire more full of peace and free from care than into his own soul."

John took this statement one step farther in Revelation 1:10:

"I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day,"

John's circumstances were far from a few days of rest on a Mediterranean Beach, though he could hear the breakers; breakers of large rocks into smaller ones as he labored, some say naked, working as a prisoner of Rome in the rock quarries of Patmos. Yet on the Lord's day he was in the Spirit, far removed from physical reality.

The principle of quiet meditation was stated by a rich Roman Emperor, and more purely stated by a follower of Jesus laboring in a rock quarry while a naked prisoner for Jesus.

An unstated blessing about this kind of travel is there are no charges for an extra bag and no huge credit card bills upon your return.
