Children
You have relationships with many people: friends, your parents, brothers and sisters, teachers, grandparents, even with people you see all the time like clerks at the local store or the school bus driver.
Relationships are important. Learning how to relate to others is a part of growing up. It's not always easy and sometimes it just doesn't go the way it's supposed to, but in the end we need each other and it's nice to know there are people in your life you can depend on.
But none of these people are with you all the time. None of these relationships are truly lasting.
While that may sound scary or upsetting, you can have a relationship with God that is as real as those others; and God is with you always. He has promised never to leave you and not only will He NOT break His promise, because He is God, He CAN'T break His promise.
No matter how old you are or what your circumstances developing a relationship with God is the best thing you can do. And the most amazing thing is that He wants to have a relationship with you!
Start by talking to Him. While He IS God and therefore deserves your respect and reverence, you don't need to say any certain words or talk in any special way. He made you the unique person you are in order to get to know Him. Just talk to Him like you would to your best friend (He is after all). Tell Him anything you want.
Then listen. God speaks in many ways, but we all need to take the time to listen to Him.
He speaks through His word. Everything that is written in the Bible is a message directly from God to you. His Spirit will show you and teach you if you will put aside everything else and just concentrate on what He wants you to know.
He also speaks through other people. Listen to advice from trusted adults. God may be telling you something through them.
As with any relationship getting to know God means spending time with Him, talking to Him and listening to what He has to say. If you will do this regularly, you will find that you look forward to time alone with Him.
And just like in any relationship you will sometimes make mistakes, but God will forgive you because He loves you. You might get mad at Him or turn away from Him, but He will always be there waiting for you to come back and He never gets mad or turns away from you.
It's pretty amazing when you think about it - the one true Almighty God who created the world and everything in it wants you to know Him as a close friend - and that's the best relationship!
