Hebrews 4:12 “The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit or joints and of marrow, and discerning the thought and intentions of the heart.”

When I think of the verse Hebrews 4:12, I have read the words many times and yes, they are wonderful but I never really put thought behind them. The word of the Lord is living and active. What does that really say? It spoke volumes to me yesterday and I just had to write down my thoughts.

When it says that the word of the Lord is living: 1. It’s not dead. It’s moving and breathing and able to be used on a daily, hourly, minutely basis. 2. It’s life is self sustaining. Nothing I or anyone else can do will stifle it. I’m not that powerful and nobody else is. The word of the Lord is living and able to carry on no matter how many others want to kill it. AMEN.

When it says that the word of the Lord is active: 1. Active means it is constantly going. Have you ever been around an active little boy? They don’t stop. They are like the energizer bunny and they just gain more energy as they go. The more active, the more active they become. They feed off the energy. 2. Active is an action word. It’s a word to describe something that has energy and power behind it. If God’s word is living and active, then when we read it and hear it, it should become alive to us. It should spur us on to more active hearing and learning.

I can honestly say that when these words came alive to me, it brought on a totally new world of thinking as to what I see in His word and how I want to learn from it. It used to be words that if I was too tired, wouldn’t sink in. I was not actively listening and it wasn’t because there wasn’t anything to hear. I didn’t stifle it. I stifled myself.

When you buy yogurt with active cultures, it is a living and active organism. The organisms in the yogurt, these bacteria, are actively built to fight the bad bacterias which inhabit our bodies. It’s made to fight with good bacteria. There is a battle going on that we don’t see. But, when we know that the live and active cultures are fighting for us, becoming our warriors, our stabilizers, and our immunity, we are able to see healthy changes come about. Just as God’s active and living cultures of His word do our fighting, show us how to become stable, and help keep us immune from the powers of this world, we are then able to be under the umbrella of His safety. I would rather have a self sustaining, active and living Word from the Lord, than the empty promises from this world. It’s just as if buying yogurt with dead cultures; it tastes just like yogurt, but doesn’t have the power behind it to do anything but fill our stomachs.
