World Wide Sodom and Gamora
By Jon Coykendall
If we as a people continue to exist in a godless world, are we as doomed as the races in biblical lore? I read the Bible as often as I can, one day I came across the story of Sodom and Gamora found in Genesis, and compared their plight to our modern day world. Placing their time into our more technically advanced time, and looking for similar activities that show a parallel to our lives today. The results are a startling look at what was a decaying existence and the punishment that God brought down on a society of corruption, debauchery and excesses. A time of false gods and idols, where the norm was celebrate now for tomorrow we die. And despite all of Gods warnings that the end would come, these poor misguided people continued in their evil desires and practices, until God brought about their demise.

In order to see the contrasts one needs to realize, the Bible is full of contradictions, after all it is written by man as an account of what was witnessed. So, how can a God that is a loving God, destroy a society of his own creation? The answer is he would not, God was simply telling these people what was going to happen to them. Using Angels he sent down with his message to mend their ways and listen to him, heed his warnings, or they would destroy themselves. Instead the Sodomites insulted Gods messengers and wanted to do harm to them, except one man Lott; he listened and left the city and God spared his life. Man added his own spin to the story to gain the attention of the reader. But the message is still the same, pay attention to Gods laws, live as Gods people, or be the instrument of your own destruction. As parents how many times have we told our children, if they follow a certain path what the resulting consequences would be. When the negative results happen we tell them they have no one to blame but themselves. Isn’t God saying the same thing to us?

As a loving God, our interests are his concern, but as any parent he wants us to be safe and not hurt ourselves, so he gives us rules to live by, called the Ten Commandments. He knows that man will sin, and he allows us to make our mistakes, that’s how we learn, just as our children learn. But in the same instance would you as a parent turn from your child if they needed help? Would you allow harm to come to them if you could prevent it? God is our father, the Lord of all, do you think for one minute he would allow anything to happen to you or your family? God did not destroy Sodom, but he knew what was about to befall them, and he sent a messenger to warn them, and they ignored him. Many in our world today say, “God does not exist, otherwise why would he let all that is happening continue?” Well the answer is we have not asked God to help, and even if he did would you hear him? Would you know that God is speaking to you? It may be a friend, a family member or a stranger that God sends as his messenger; it could be Gods only son Jesus, would you recognize him?

We as with Sodom are facing the same destruction at our own hands, oh yes it may be the greedy, and the corrupt in our society that is leading us to the path of destruction. But we have not called on God to come to our aide, we as a people feel we can fix this, just as our parents have before us. But, our parents had God on their side, they went to church each Sunday, they thanked God for the gifts he gave them, the peace with out war, an economy that was growing, and their families. How do you think they got through WWII, a Depression, and raising the baby boomer generation. We thought we would do such great things and who needs God. The message from Sodom should be clear, Listen, pay attention because God will speak, not in a roar, but a whisper.

In Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Jesus made his message, the message of God the father clear, “ Believe in me, I am the light and the truth, those who believe in me shall not die but have eternal life.” And Jesus went on to task all Christians, “ The Son of God did not come down to be served, but to serve. And I task each of you to serve each other and to take care of one another as I have taken care of you.” These same books also Quote Jesus speaking of his Father and using this comparison. “ If a son asked his Father for bread would the father give him a stone? If the son asked for a fish would the father give him a serpent? Of course not, the father would give what is asked. The same with God my father, ask for what you need with an open heart, freely and the Father will provide it.” This is the word of a loving God, one we have turned our backs on and one we all need back in our lives.

If you believe that all we have accomplished is of our own accord I challenge you to examine the facts. Yes we know how the human body works, we can replace organs, repair bones, cure all kinds of disease, even see and repair parts of the human brain but we know little of what makes us self aware, the mystery of life. Compare it to a car manufacturer, he can teach a mechanic how to fix and replace parts to keep his product running, but the building and manufacturing process is his secret. God gave the ability to certain people to become doctors and scientists to keep the human machine running, but the secret to its creation belongs to God. If you think about all that science has proven, and all that has been discovered, one thing remains unclear, where does evolution end and creation begin? Is it possible that this all just happened? Everything in perfect balance? Science tells us there is no such thing as perfection, if that is so then some power had to create the human being, and our world, because everything had to be perfect in order for man to be created.

Science can prove that the destruction of Sodom occurred because of an impact from an asteroid in the region around the time that Sodom Burned. What can’t be proven is how the bible records it and how Lott knew of the event. Science can prove how the sea was parted for Moses when he led Gods people out of Egypt. What they can’t prove is how Moses knew when and where the sea would part. It all boils back to God, the bible and a book that has evolved into many different languages, and has survived thousands of years. The stories don’t change Gods laws never change, we as Gods people need to listen and live by Gods laws.

Over the last decade we have seen America spiral down ward, Companies that have been the foundation of our culture have gone bankrupt. Corporate leaders we thought were trust worthy, have stolen from stockholders, used money for questionable investments, and lost billions, and the ones who suffered were the people that trusted them. We have seen a decline in the integrity of our government leaders, affairs, the abuse of power, deal making for political gain, all the while the American people suffer. These are the signs of a modern day Sodom, and unless we heed Gods warning and turn to him we will suffer the same fate at our own hands.

The power lies in our leaders, both Government and Religious. Now is the time to return to our parent’s way of life. Work and money can no longer be the driving force behind our culture. We need a day of prayer, a day to reflect and get back to God. One day in 7 to be totally at peace and listen to the messages our lord is saying to us. We have a challenge right now in our world, a new anti-Christ, called the Talleban, and they are just as dangerous as the Nazis in WWII. Only now they are hitting home not just in Europe. Only God can give us the tools needed to destroy this evil and regain the peace we all deserve. During WWII the blue laws were in effect, there was no business done on Sundays, people went to Church as a family, family was important. For one day out of the week, everyone prayed together to God in one voice, and he answered, in the form of many heroes during the war that paid the ultimate price for world peace. Together as Christians we can again come together and create the type of world our Parents left us, not perfect, but loving and caring about each other. It is time for all of us to remember what it was to believe in Jesus and his promise from God the father. Stop trying to remove the symbols of our faith, and the faith that created this great Country, but embrace them and ask God to forgive us for straying from his light. The results will be awesome.

Scripture used is from the King James Version of the Holy Bible New Testament of the Apostles and Genesis of the Old Testament.
