UNDERSTANDING THE BOOK OF REVELATION

I am writing this article out of concern for those who have received a copy of my book “the Reward of Faithfulness” A study in Revelation. Some have found it difficult to understand. If you have not had much exposure to the Bible in your life and no background at all, Revelation may be a closed book to you.

In order for you to receive the blessing that this book promises, I want to help by giving you some important information. You may even have gone to church all of your life but never studied the Bible at all. So to begin:

When Jesus was on earth He told His disciples that some day In the future He would return again, When He returned he would do two things,

1. Destroy all the enemies that caused His followers problems.

2. He would come and take all of His followers to be at home with Him to be in Heaven.

All of this is described In Matthew chapter 24. It is called the Olivet Discourse.

In this chapter Jesus describes many things that will happen before He returns. Men will be at war with one another; people will reject truth and follow false teachers and a great disinterest and falling away from God will occur. During this time a period of great tribulation will take place but before things get too far out of hand, Jesus will return.

It would be good for you to read Matthew 24 in a more modern translation to better understand.

The book of Revelation was written by the only Apostle of Christ who did not suffer a Martyrs Death. Revelation gives the final message of that contained in Matthew 24.

It begins by addressing seven churches in seven particular conditions. These are chosen because of their particular problems which will be present throughout the ages. The church is addressed in scripture as the bride of Christ. (Revelation chapter 19) In revelation Chapter 2and 3, the church is seen as not yet ready for the wedding which will take place later. In chapters 4- 18 we see things happening which will bring this church to maturity. We might compare it to Gold being melted and the impurities removed. Finally we see the Bride adorned and ready for the arrival of the bridegroom in Chapter 19. In Chapter 21 the marriage is seen as now completed and in 22 we see the church at home at last enjoying the presence of God forever.
The word Revelation Means “to remove the covering. That is what God has done in giving us this wonderful book.

In Revelation chapter one verse three God begins by giving this wonderful promise.

“Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.”
