One Christmas Eve, long ago, a young single Mom was in despair. Every last penny had gone on two precious gifts for her children, and there was nothing left to put in stockings, hung hopefully at the foot of both beds.

It had been a long tiring day, trying to fill dreams on a shoestring…………but she had completely forgotten all about the Christmas stockings.
Christmas was the worst that year, family a zillion miles away, a nightmare divorce still going on, and no faith, back then , to cling to.
How could she forget the most important part of all, stockings and Santa!

Her kids had carefully laid out a carrot for the Reindeer, and a cookie for Father Christmas, all to be washed down with a glass of milk. Little Alice, only four had insisted on the milk, and Thomas, at two, toddled off to find a carrot. Mom smiled at her two sleeping angels, so excited about the coming day. They were her world.

Then, an idea, straight from Santa’s snack. Bake cookies, and raid the fruit bowl…………..that would work! So she baked, and wrapped still warm cookies in little packets of foil, into the early hours of Christmas Day Morning. An apple and an orange each, and they were good to go. Not the greatest, by any means, but something, at least.

She tiptoed to the children’s beds, and hung back each stocking , wishing with all her heart she could do more.
Time to turn off the lights, and sleep she thought, by now very ,very ,weary.
The front porch light was still on, so she opened the door to flip the switch.

There on the porch, at 2 am Christmas Day, many years ago, was an ocean of white plastic shopping bags, and every one stuffed to the brim with toys!
