THE HUNGER AND THIRST WITHIN- BY FELIX OBI ABRAHAMS
>
> Blessed are they which do HUNGER and THIRST after righteusness for they
> shall be filled (Matt 5:6)
>
> “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found call ye upon him while he is
> near” (Isaiah 55:6)
>
> There is a special hunger in every living person on earth. This hunger
> cannot be assuaged by food, neither can a drink quench the thirst that
> comes with it. We all are born with this deep-seated hunger but not all
> of us have found the right cuisine and diet that satisfies this hunger.
>
> All men of all ages have had to struggle with this hunger. Many in their
> lifetime were able to brush aside all political opposition to rise up as
> exalted and revered leaders of great empires. Though having authority
> over the ruled, this hunger ruled them till death.
>
> Napolean Bornaparte of France conquered the known world of his time, but
> he died an unfulfilled “great man” for this hunger famished him. The
> great Julius Caesar and other great emperors of Rome and Greece died
> without filling this hunger.
>
> Many in their quest to quench this hunger had amassed great wealth,
> estates, and other innumerable possessions, yet the hunger pangs within
> stayed on . Many more have used all forms of fun and activities in
> attempt to silence the voice of this hunger to no avail.
>
> Ironically. the food for this special hunger is the cheapest and most
> affordable to all with no attached price tags on it.
>
> St.Augustine of Carthage discovered this truth after a long and tortuous
> journey of seeking knowledge, fun and pleasure. He came to realize that
> within everyman/woman is a restlessness and longing for a reunion with
> God, our creator. Hence, no one can find true fulfilment or any lasting
> satisfaction in life if this hunger for God is not given the right food.
>
> The interesting twist in this melodrama of life is that God also hungers
> for this reunion with man as much as man hungers for him. The fellowship
> between man and God was at its best in the early days of creation at the
> garden of Eden until the plague of sin stepped into the scene....... Then
> came the tragic separation of man from God!
>
> But all through the centuries gone by, certain men enjoyed unusual
> followship with God.
>
> For instance, God so enjoyed the company of a man named Enoch such that
> he was invited into heaven without obtaining the visa called death. The
> Bible is replete with numerous records of common men and women who
> enjoyed deep fellowship with God during their lifetime.
> In our contemporany global world, many seem not to notice the presence of
> this hunger, which only God can fill. What with the quest for materialism
> and hedonism, the dismantling of absolute standards for ethics and
> morals! Now scruples no longer are lodged within the consciences of men.
> Today’s world is rich with material goods, but bereft of fulfilment with
> no derivable utility from them. The scramble for money is at an all time
> high, yet peace eludes the hearts of those that have amassed fortune in
> money parlance!
>
> There is disarray in the entire world. The business empires of men are
> ever crashing daily. Mergers can’tever stem the rate of business decline.
>
> Marriages are being battered by the bull warks of the villain called
> divorce. The family unit is no longer reverred. Anxiety about the safety
> of our planet is on the increase. People abhor the dooms day ahead!.
>
> It is time for us to face this hunger within. We must not join the
> foolish ostrich in this abominable hippocrisy that all is well with our
> world
>
> We must get back to God, else this hunger may kill us. We desperately
> need him (God) now than at any other epoch in the history of human
> existence. God must not be shut out of our lives. Let’s go back to God,
> for he alone can truly bring us to the place of our destiny and
> fulfillment.
> ................come let us return to the Lord.
> SCRIPTURAL TRIP:
> “ For I will pour water upon him that is THIRSTY, and floods upon the dry
> ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine
> off spring:
> And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water
> courses. One shall say, I am the Lord’s; and another call himself by the
> name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord,
> and surname himself by the name of Israel”(Isaiah 44:3-5)
>
> “Ho, everyone who THIRSTS, come to the water; And you who have no money,
> come, buy and eat. yes, come and buy wine and milk without money and
> without price.
> Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what
> does not satisfy?
> Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight
> itself in abundance.
> Incline your ear, and come to me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I
> will make an everlasting convenant with you -The sure mercies for David.
> (Is 55:1-3)
