Faith
Do we really listen to the words of hymns as we sing them? Are the words so familiar our lips just move automatically, and our brains are run on autopilot? The song writers weave foundations of faith with rhyme and harmony. We hurt only ourselves when we ignore lyrics of life eternal!
One of the very first hymns I remember hearing as a new Christian still touches my heart. “Trust and Obey” led me to trust more fully in my new Lord and Savior Jesus. He helped me to face my fears, trusting Him to be my strength and protection. His word challenged me to obey His commands. It is a life time command: Trust and obey.
I am not a pet owner; but know pet training and obedience schools are routine for many loving pet guardians. I believe as followers of the Lord we can learn valuable lessons from those taught to man’s best friend. Dogs are trained to obediently “walk” at the side of their master. We must also keep in step. “For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJ).” If we place our faith in Jesus, he becomes our eyes! The owner of a dog teaches the dog to follow the command “stay!” The animal waits for following instructions. Often the pet’s safety is at stake, such as approaching traffic. Waiting is one of the most difficult issues we face. “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord (Psalms 27:14 NKJ)!” Dogs happily learn to “shake” hands and want to repeat the greeting again and again! Christians should extend hands of fellowship and love. “they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship (Galatians 2:9b NKJ).” Faithful dogs race off to do as commanded when the word “fetch” rings in their ears! They run to find the ball or stick and drop it directly in front of the master. Will we fetch, bring souls to the feet of the Master as Andrew brought his brother? “He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, We have found the Messiah (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus (John 1:41-42 NKJ).”
One of the most entertaining of dog commands is “roll over!” Dogs enthusiastically roll over with tails wagging, waiting to get their belly scratched! We can roll all our cares upon the loving Father. “Let him have all your worries and cares, for he is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you (1 Peter 5:7 Living Bible Paraphrased).” We will be happy and find contentment when like man’s best friend, we learn to “Trust and Obey!”
