Cyber Family Bonding


Who ever would have thought that a home computer and cyber space would have brought me closer to my family. I never did, but it happened. I used to only talk to my mom, and my brother once in a while–for holidays, special occasions, or when I would watch their kids for them. Now, it seems that instant messaging and e-mail has opened up a new door for me.

I’ve been chatting with my mom almost day now, and I think it’s great. I sent her a short story over email, and I sent her friend, who’s dad died an e-card. I finally feel a part of my family and I am getting to know them in a new way. I had just talked to my brother, and he was telling me all about his computer website he was constructing, and we were talking about work, relationships, etc. It’s a whole new world of communication open to us. I wonder if we could ever be this open with one another in person. Even if we never did, it wouldn’t matter because I am happy that we have at least this new tool

Otherwise, we would be pretty silent to each other, only eating turkey dinner, unwrapping presents, or celebrating birthdays together. That is fine, but I always wanted to get to know my family as people. Now I found an opportunity to do so, and it is great. Then, when I see them in person, even if we don’t talk very personal very often, face to face we will feel closer to each other than we did before. I’m looking forward to that. Who ever thought it would be a computer, and cyber space, the supposedly most impersonal communications out there.

I say keep it up internet providers. As long as you don’t send us two much junk mail you are doing a great job. Thank you very much, and I will get back to chatting with my family now...
