"We discussed the
pearl-Parable,
tonight,
Lord."
[NODDING.]
"I thought it was gonna
be about that pigs-swine-
and-pearl one."
(Clueless squint. )
"But.....it WASN'T.
I didn't like THAT ONE,
either."
(Look up, irritably.)
"I think pigs are
bad-mouthed,
too MUCH,
in the BIBLE,
LORD."
[SMILING.]
[LOOKING OVER,
TO HIS RIGHT.]
"Yeah;
one time,
I saw a little
Vietnamese-Pot-Belly pig,
on a collar and leash,
at PetSmart;
he was really CUTE."
[LAUGHING WITH DELIGHT.]
(Look up.)
"You gonna ask me to
READ IT, to YA:
the PARABLE?
Or...are You still MAD
at me?"
"About what,
o'kin'der."
(Laugh!)
"Ya know.....cuz,
I called You a Fairy-Tale,
this afternoon,
and all."
[GENTLE VOICE.]
"No."
"Okay.
Well......it was this Parable:"
(Squint.)
(Flip some pages.)
"I can't FIND it,
Lord."
(Flip more pages,
irritably.)
"It was in MATTHEW."
[PATIENT NOD.]
[SMILE.]
(Irritably flipping
more pages.)
(Squinting at the Red Parts.)
"Can't find it.
My workbook's in the CAR."
(Squint at the ceiling.)
"Well.....YOU know it."
[NODDING.]
[CHUCKLING.]
"Tell It
to Me,
child."
(Sigh.)
"Well.....it's about this
guy who was FARMING...
and, he accidentally found
this box with a PEARL in it."
[SMILE.]
"Go on."
(Shrug.)
"Well......I thought it
was really stupid,
because he left the box
of pearls sitting there in
the dirt....to go off, and
do some other STUFF."
[CHUCKLING.]
[GLANCE TO HIS RIGHT.]
(Run hand through
messy hair.)
"I didn't understand it;
WHY DID HE HAVE
TO GO, AND SELL ALL
HE HAD?
(Flip to a page,
that's been chewed on
by a cat.)
"....When, he already
HAD THE BOX 'A PEARLS
to START with?"
[PATIENT GAZE.]
[LISTEN TO A WOLF
HOWLING AT THE MOON
SOMEWHERE.]
"Anyhow....it was about
finding a pearl, and selling
all you had...and, buying
some land.....none of it made
any SENSE."
[PATIENT NODDING.]
[LISTENING TO
SOME FOLKS CHATTING
ON THE SPACE STATION.]
"....Something,
about a KINGDOM,
too."
[CURIOUS GAZE.]
"What of It,
My child?"
(Irritably thinking
of going to work,
in the morning.)
"Huh?
I DUNNO!
It was YOUR STORY!"
(Cranky voice.)
"Why do I have to
EXPLAIN EVERYTHING?"
"Oy Vey."
"That's what I SAY!"
(Grimmace.)
"...kingdom-this,
and kingdom-that:
it all seemed like
another FAIRY-TALE,
to me!"
"I understand,
My precious."
"Well....I CERTAINLY
don't see any
FAIRY-TALES,
down here,
Lord."
(Look upwards,
chewing on a pretzel.)
"Most endings I know...
aren't happy, AT ALL.
..Just PAINFUL,
and, MESSY;
in the REAL WORLD,
the wicked-witch-of
the-west beats the
hell outta poor
Snow-White!"
[SORROWFUL GAZE.]
"I understand,
My little one."
(Drop a pretzel
on the floor.)
"Maybe, they
were talking 'bout..
some OTHER place."
[TENDER VOICE.]
"Yes, child.
They
were."

The kingdom of heaven
is like treasure
hidden
in a field,
which a man
found and hid;
and for joy
over it
he goes and sells
all that he
has,
and buys
that field.
[MATTHEW 13:44]
