I wonder what life is like in places far away… Mommy says I am always day dreaming. Is it wrong to want to see other neighborhoods or make friends? I want to find adventure, experience danger, learn new things, and hear strange noises after dark! I will try to guess what is making the sounds, and do my best to copy them.


“Midge, where are you?”


“I’m over here Mommy, by the edge of the water.”


“I have been looking all over for you! Why didn’t you stay with your brothers and sisters?”


“I’m sorry Mommy. I wanted to be alone.”


“I know you are day dreaming again!”


“I can’t help it. I just want to find out what I am missing.”


“Why can’t you be happy with what you have? Don’t you have everything you need?”


“Mommy, you are so good to me! Yes, I always have everything I need. You give me good food and our home here near the water is so nice. I just want to see other parts of the country, too.”


“We’ll talk about this later. Let’s go eat our lunch.”


Midge went along with her mommy and tried to forget about her secret. She could not remember when her dreams began to turn into plans. There must be a way to make them come true. The chance would come to finally discover her wildest dreams! Waiting is never easy and being little makes that time so hard. Grown ups don’t pay attention, and just can’t remember what it is like to be little!


“Mommy, can we go swimming?”


“You know you can’t go in the water right after you eat. Go play over there in that nice soft grass for a while. Then we can all go swimming together.”


Midge didn’t complain out loud, but inside thought to herself… I always have to wait! Her mother rested while all of her little ones played a game of leap frog. It took Midge’s mind off of her problems; and the time went by faster than she thought it would.


“Do you all still want to go swimming?”


Midge didn’t care about anybody else. She rushed to her mother’s side, wanting to be the first one in the water!


“Wait a minute young lady! We will go in together; wait for your brothers and sisters!”


Midge heaved a sigh and almost complained out loud this time, waiting again!


“Remember the rules. Use the buddy system. Stay close to the edge of the water. Do not do anything foolish! I am right here watching you!”


The excited family slid down the bank into the water. At first it felt cold and made them shiver. Soon they were swimming around and having a wonderful time! They played games, splashed each other and even had a race from one side to the other.


“This is the life for me,” said Midge!


They were not alone. It did not matter to her. The pretty day brought lots more to enjoy the sunshine and refreshing water. Suddenly Midge noticed something out of the corner of her eye. Her mother had been joined by a friend. This could be her chance to sneak away! If her mother talked with the friend, she would not be watching her so closely. Midge looked out across the water and decided she would do it!


She went down under the water and started swimming as fast as she could! Her legs were kicking back and forth, back and forth. It seemed like she had been under the water forever! She had no way of knowing how far she had come, or of how far she needed to swim until she would reach the other side. Everything looked very dark and she began to be afraid. What if she got lost and could never see her mommy and brothers and sisters again? Her legs were getting very tired and she wanted air! She began to swim up and up until she could see daylight again. She opened her eyes and saw her mommy far away.


“Mommy, help! I’m afraid!”


Her mother heard a small voice and began to count heads…. “Midge, where is Midge? Where are you Midge?”


“Mommy, I’m here! Here I am Mommy,Help!”


Her mother spotted her in the far end of the pond and began swimming towards her. “Midge, climb on that green lily pad behind you! Wait there! I’m coming!”

This is one time Midge did not mind waiting!
