When we think about spreading the word of God it is easy to be stuck imagining the great 19th century missionaries who went out around the world and risked their lives to tell peoples about the Lord. Cannibals and wild animals rage in the popular imagination when missionaries are mentioned. This isn't for me, we are inclined to think. It can even seem that the world has changed, that everyone knows about Jesus already, that our work is merely to live a Christian life and nothing more.
But we are still called to spread the word of God. Many people in many countries have even in the 21st century not heard of Jesus Christ. We may have commitments here in our Western lives that preclude us from a calling to travel to them, but there are many people in our own so-called Christian countries that need to find Jesus, and we can find our missionary purpose in spreading the Word of God to them.
The work is the same, whether taking the Word of God to Africa, or to our neighbours. We are following the calling that God has readied for us, and if we obey then we are doing his work.
We can make sure that the people we come into contact with know that we are Christians. We must adjust our techniques to every different person. Sometimes we can be overt, other times it is enough to show that Christian love which God provides for us to share with others.
We must use every tool at our disposal. Now, in the 21st century we have the new tool - the net. The internet is a great way to bring the Word of God before people. This is not threatening and it is easy for a non-believer to start hearing the Word of God in their inbox on their own, without feeling they have to show everyone that they are interested in Christianity by immediately appearing at church.
There are many ways that we can use to spread the Word of God. What matters is that we try and find ways and means that work for us, in the situations that we find ourselves. That this is important is clear, and that it is an ongoing necessity is obvious.
Until everyone has heard the Word, we cannot allow ourselves to stop! You can be as much a missionary as any of the great adventurers of the past!
