Luke 5:1-11 – Gone Fishing!
Key Verses: (NIV)
- 1: “One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around Him and listening to the word of God...” – Jesus’ ministry had just begun yet large crowds seeking the word of God were gathered around.
- 3: “He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then He sat down and taught the people from the boat.” – With the crowd pressing in, this movement offshore in Simon’s boat afforded Jesus space and a preaching platform.
- 4: “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” – Notice how Luke does not record the words spoken to the crowd, but instead, focuses on the interaction between Jesus and one man, Simon Peter.
- 5: “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” – Working hard all night without success would have caused Simon to be tired and frustrated. Putting the nets back into the water would mean a lot more work for the already fatigued fishermen.
- 6: “When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.” – Amazing things happen in our lives when we choose to listen to Christ.
- 8: “When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, ‘Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!’” – Simon was confronted with the reality of his own human failings reflected in the perfection of Jesus.
- 10-11: “Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.’ So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything, and followed Him.” – There is no turning back.
- Do you seek God?
Promises of the Gospel:
Jesus bursts into our lives in very extraordinary ways. His is a personal message that can make a difference in our ordinary lives. He will ask us to go deeper and farther then we are willing to go. He will ask us to do things that we know will not work and He will prove us wrong. He will take our life’s experiences and turn our expectations up-side-down. His abundance will threaten to overwhelm us. When we come to recognize who He is and the magnitude of His love, we feel unworthy by comparison. Why is He willing to do these things for us? We shout out: ‘Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!’ And then, with His spirit lifting and guiding, we drop our lives at His feet, stand in the shadow of His glory, and step out into a life of faith that is only available with Him.
