What are communities, villages, cities, provinces, states, nations and continents? To many they are a geographic area, a land mass with borders on a map. They are designated with a latitude and longitude. To the One who matters most, to God the Father they are people. He tenderly sees the multitudes.


The Bible often uses the term multitudes as it describes groups of people. The word crowd is too narrow of a word, simply not large enough in scope. The Lord wants His readers to see the large expanse of the multitudes. His heart has compassion for people, for multitudes where ever they are found.


India brings to mind an ever growing population, multitudes of people who are each unique and cherished by their Creator God. He always looks on the multitudes as seeing each one involved separately. The scriptures clearly show the Lord’s personal interest in the multitudes. I want to share a few references as we focus on the theme, multitudes.


A multitude was going in the wrong direction, each trying to make a name for themselves. Today we would say they were power seekers and climbing the ladder or tower to success. They desired to leave their mark in history by their great accomplishments. Yes, all would see their tower reaching up into the heavens! (Genesis 11:1-4) God became involved; He intervened in their selfish plans. They soon were scattered in every direction! (Genesis 11:5-9)


God’s chosen people were living in bondage in Egypt. He saw the multitudes there and He heard their cries for help. (Exodus 2:23-25) He would send a deliverer and chose Moses with the message to Pharaoh, “Let My people go!”(Exodus 5:1) The ruler’s heart became hardened but would be broken, along with his stubborn pride and will. He let God’s people go!


A multitude wandered in the wilderness for forty years needing to be transformed to dwell in Canaan land, God’s promised land of milk and honey. From the multitude only a remnant would walk across its' borders. Even Moses was forbidden to enter.


Jesus always tenderly looked upon the multitudes as “sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36) He led as their Good Shepherd sent to carry the multitudes to safety. He would freely give His very life for them, for us, the multitudes today. (John 10:14-18) Times change; the need of the multitudes for a shepherd has not changed. Jesus words to The Apostle Peter ring in our ears,
(John 21:15-17) “Feed (tend) My sheep.” India's multitudes are sheep without a shepherd. Who will gather them safely into His flock?
