Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday October 21, 2009

One of my favorite verses on living a practical effective life is one written by Moses as a prayer for his own life. That he was successful beyond measure is undeniable. I find when my life hits the doldrums it is due to failure to think on this verse in Psalm 90:12:

"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."

Numbering our days simply means counting or in our lingo, making the day count. Time management is the term industry would apply to this verse. I think the term is a misnomer and my suspicion is strengthened by the late Peter Drucker who wrote:

"You cannot manage time; you can only manage yourself."

Current personal development guru Brian Tracy further clarifies the concept with his contribution to this thought:

"The average person who develops the habit of setting clear priorities and getting important tasks completed quickly will run circles around a genius who talks a lot and makes wonderful plans but who gets very little done."

Neither Moses, Peter Drucker nor Brian Tracy are teaching us to be busy. They are teaching us the importance of learning to use our allotted time wisely by implementing a few simple methods in our daily life.

We often question the experts who write books about some aspect of business life and I know of no group of professionals who take more of a beating than "Efficiency Experts." I took a course with an eye to becoming one of the mentioned animals. The premise of the efficiency aficionados is to learn to use the minimum amount of movement necessary to accomplish a given task, effectively using time thus increasing production. This principle works wonders in any undertaking. This simple procedure eliminates "busy" and when a little but thorough pre-planning is applied the result is near to an epiphany in our life.

If you are a Christian you have an ethical responsibility to redeem the time therefore ineffective living is not an option. Moses knew this and now so do you.

As to Moses taking 40 years to complete a 10 day journey; after 400 years of slavery serious preparation for freedom was essential.
