Throughout life we will encounter wounds. Not just the fleshly physical wounds that a band-aid can cover but deep, emotional wounds. It is true that people will say or do things that are hurtful to us but many times those wounds are superficial. Certainly we can make a lot more out of them but it is the deep wounds which are more damaging than any other.

Deep wounds result from various sources but most commonly from some kind of abusive relationship, betrayal or something that affects our emotional stability. These wounds aren’t always obvious but routinely surface in our attitudes or the way we treat other people. Quite often I have encountered people in the workplace which are difficult to deal with. The smallest request seems to generate a harsh response. In time, I have come to find out that these people have a deep wound in their lives. These people cope with their own hurts by hurting others. It doesn’t make it right but it does explain the way people act. I have often asked the question if these people can see how they are acting. It seems pretty obvious but, unfortunately, to them it isn’t such an obvious sign.

We have a lot of people who sit on the church pews each Sunday with deep wounds in their lives. A simple two-minute prayer won’t bring healing to the wounds. You can’t just put a band-aid on it or quote a worn out Christian cliché to fix it. It takes more than that. It is sad that we don’t do more to help those with deep wounds than to simply tell them that we’re praying for them. I know that people mean well when they say that but I can’t help to wonder if they really mean it when they say it or is it just something to say when you can’t offer anything else. You’re going to pray for me? Really? What do I do until then? The wound is still there.

Absalom had some deep wounds of his own which were never healed. (2 Samuel 13) After experiencing the of his sister Tamar by his brother, n, this fueled some deep wounds in Absalom for the rest of his life. It was never dealt with or healed. Absalom’s father, David, is known as a great hero of the Bible but he was never able to help Absalom deal with this hurt in the depths of his heart.

Everyone heals differently. We are all made up in various ways. You can’t use a standard blueprint to put everyone in to deal with the deep hurts in their lives. There is no set timetable. The point is that a healing needs to start. Denial never accomplishes anything. Never deal with someone with deep wounds with the attitude of telling them to “get over it”! That is the most calloused way of trying to help someone. In fact, that isn’t helping at all, that’s selfishness and impatience. Instead of becoming impatient, try helping someone.

If you are hurting and need healing for deep wounds in your life, here are some things that will help:

Prayer – Deep prayer brings healing to deep wounds. Don’t simply depend upon those prayers in a prayer line to bring deliverance. Bringing out deep wounds requires some soul searching and work of the Holy Spirit to touch your soul and peel back the layers of hurt within you.

Consider professional help - A professional Christian counselor may be necessary in some cases. It may cost you some money but you need to at least consider this option. If not a professional counselor, seek out a support group in your area.

Intimate Worship – Pick out some slow worship songs and spend quiet time in meditation upon these songs. Some of the best worship includes those songs which identify God as a loving father.

Confide in someone – I listed this one last because I wasn’t sure whether or not to list it at all. If you decide to confide in someone, you must make sure that you are making the right decision on the right person. You certainly don’t want to risk further hurt by confiding in someone who is not reliable. Choose this step carefully.

The hardest part of all this is making the first step toward healing. I know that when I have done this, I didn’t like opening up the wound or revealing the true source of my hurt. It isn’t pleasant but you can never have healing without first opening up yourself to God. God is completely committed to you and the restoration of your soul but a wound that goes untreated or denied cannot be healed. Invite Jesus to your wound, He is the expert in mending the broken parts of your life. He was sent to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release for the prisoners. (Isaiah 61:1)

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.”
