Not the fleshly organ that drumbeats in your chest. The other one: what you think, what you do, how you live, the essence of who you are. The dictionary defines it as the center of one's being, the emotions and sensibilities; the capacity for love, concern and fortitude, the most central part and deepest emotional feeling. That heart is really all that counts. Jesus said, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." It's the operating system above and beyond the physical. Our language recognizes this with such terms as tender-hearted, big hearted, kind hearted, true hearted as opposed to hard hearted and cold hearted.

In the final analysis it is all that matters about a person. In spite of differing circumstanes, the condition of the heart will determine how a person lives, whether he loves or hates and when, how happy or unhappy he'll be, everything about him. It is not synonymous with the mind. A brilliant scientist can be a cold-hearted individual. But the well-educated heart has learned to love God and his fellow man. Great learning is good but irrelevant in heart matters. The true heart seeks truth for himself and for others and embodies it. Scripture says, "Buy the truth and sell it not." The poet has said, "Truth crushed to earth will rise again," and yes, it will finally prevail. The truth of the matter is that the condition of the heart is all that matters. Seek the truth, share the truth, live by the truth. It is better than fine gold.

This makes the playing field level for everyone to follow Christ because He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. We may have different kinds and amounts of talent, different gifts or different mental, physical or emotional capacities, but we all have hearts that can belong wholly to Christ.if we so choose. I have seen great faith and successful living in people with handicaps in one or more of these areas because their hearts were filled with love for God and others. Lives must fit under that umbrella. Every other attribute pales into insignificance: education, beauty, favor, prestige. None has any value if the heart is not truly right with God.
