the Alpha
and
the Omega,
the Beginning
and the End.

(The sun is setting.
Jesus and His
disciples have been
walking all day,
and are now sitting,
near the cool shoreline.
Jesus has come to talk
with Peter, who is sighing,
rather impatiently, as
he repairs a tear in
one of his worn sandals.)

[QUIET VOICE.]
"We have walked a long
ways, today....Peter."
[GENTLE SMILE.]
"If only....we had
the horseless-chariot."

(Burst of laughter!)
"What SORT of chariot...
my LORD?"

[SMILE!]
[CHUCKLE!]
"Well;
you do ...."
[MOTION WITH HANDS.]
".....Get into it,
Peter.
Only,
there are no horses."

"No HORSES?
Then....HOW does it.."
(Wave hands,
impatiently, toward
the dirt road.)
"GO?"

[PATIENT PAUSE.]
"With....
with, fire."

(Look of astonishment.)
"FIRE?
But....isn't that
very DANGEROUS?"

"Yes.
Sometimes, Peter."
[NOD.]
"And, very costly.
You must pour
oil,
into the front of the
chariot....and,
it ..."
[SMILE!]
[LAUGH!]
"It...goes."

(Bark of laughter!)
"OIL?
What sort of OIL,
Lord?"

[GENTLE SIGH.]
"Oh, the most
expensive kind;
it is more costly,
than any oil
you have ever seen.
Nations....
will go to war,
over it."

(Frown!)
"Well, then
why don't they
simply,
use HORSES?
Or...
DONKEYS?"

"Very few of
these folk,
Peter....
have ever SEEN
a donkey."

"WHAT?"
(Laugh, out loud!)
"HA!
I don't BELIEVE it!"

[GENTLY CHIDING VOICE.]
[CURIOUS SQUINT.]
"You don't BELIEVE
Me,
Peter?"

"I do BELIEVE You,
Lord! I just can't
IMAGINE!
What sort of people
would pour very
precious OIL.....
into the front of
a CHARIOT?
They sound like FOOLS!"

[SIGH.]
"Well......."
[CHUCKLE!]

"Who BUILT
these CHARIOTS,
LORD?"
(Point to the
clouds, toward
the setting sun.)
"Those same PEOPLE?
The ones who
COOK their
tiny dark BEANS,
for a DRINK?
And......
WRITE,
on those...
strange
SCROLLS?"

[SMILE!]
[NOD.]
"Yes,
My Peter!
YES.
The VERY ones."

"But....
why don't they
just WALK?
Don't their legs...
become WEAK?"

[NOD!]
"Sometimes....Peter!
Yes. SOMETIMES,
they do."

(Chuckle!)
"What FOOLS!"
(Laugh!)
"And,
to THINK!
They've never
seen:
a DONKEY!"

"No."
[INTENSE GAZE.]
[QUIET VOICE.]
"But,
they all
will,
one day,
hear
about One."

Go into the
village opposite you,
and immediately
you will find a donkey
tied,
and a colt with her.
Loose them
and bring them
to Me.
