Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday September 17, 2009
As many of you know the goal of this daily is to glorify Christ in one page. A brief missile offered in the hope of doing three things beyond the above mentioned: Cause serious thought, encourage intense feeling, feeling strong enough to motivate to action. That I fail is often true, but at least I try. This week so far I have been effective. Last week I was excoriated for being a Calvinist, spelled with a capital "K" and this group of days brings 8-10 page indoctrination into the splendors of said system. So, I am provoking thought, feeling and enough energy to act on the ole keyboard.
You may find it strange that I expect this because the human by nature is more intensely against than it is for. To give you an idea of the monumental task presented by this simple one 81/2xpage is contained in a statement made to me by a younger preacher who for some reason was near apologetic for reading Spurgeon and felt compelled to say that he had read a shelf full of the "Prince of Preachers" writing and found no evidence of his being a Calvinist. Perhaps he skipped a few chapters.
As God has spared me from being seminary presidential material I just keep things reasonably simple and hope to be used to keep someone from pulling the trigger, which by the way has been the case a few times over the years.
Today, I am expecting a gaggle of letters from The First Warm Fuzzy Church of America. One of their own, a man of deep thought, Ravi Zacharias, wrote:
"Evangelicals were seen to be masters in entertainment and minimalist in thought."
I hope all who think this statement is cute or right on, will get the address and send me money, for I will be drawn and quartered, perhaps literally for daring to pass on such a statement. While I make light, I do so with a tear trying to make its way from my cold, cold heart up through the eye and scald my cheek. The above is too true for much humor.
In my early years of preaching it was common to preach while suspecting an assumed base of knowledge. Now, when cardinal doctrines are mentioned, the speaker is more often than not, met with blank stares. Watching the occupants of Wisteria Lane on TV is NOT conducive to learning the basic tenets of the faith.
Here is a grand verse that you should give serious thought to today:
Hebrews 12:2,
"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."
There is more here than some dare to think.
