“Beads of Change,” by Maryland author Carol Joyce, is an inspirational book for young adults and their families. Its engaging main character, Melissa Rose, doesn’t like change, but faces a number of them within her family at the same time she is entering middle school.
Melissa’s favorite time of year, summer is coming to an end at the Southern Shores. Her older sister is leaving for college and her mom decides to go back to work. As Melissa wrestles with the changes, she discovers the keys to getting through are “beads” that she writes about in her journal—and the chain that links these “beads” together.
