They wandered in the wilderness
And found no pleasant place to dwell
Their thirsty longing soul was faint
The walk had made their hunger swell
These people I was made to see
Are those that live in poverty

Beyond the cove but further down
They sat in darkness bound in chains
Rebellion being the root and cause
A group of people, afflicted, in pains
An understanding came to me
These ones have need to be set free

I walked but half a mile and stopped
Surprised to find a group I knew
Who years ago had laughed at truth
But now lay sick upon a pew
Their sin and gross iniquity
Had brought illness, invoking pity

I shook my head and looked to find
A man some distance standing by
Sir don’t you see all that I see
I said to him with great a sigh
My walk along this horrid shore
Has made me look at life some more

His answer drew me back a bit
Fine sir, I’m too involved to think
My business crashed because a storm
Has made my boats and goods to sink
The God I thought I served for years
Could not save me these endless tears

Ah! Then I said, your great mistake
What makes you think he didn’t see?
He sent his own aboard a ship
A storm as such did rage the sea
And when the threat of death looked real
He came and said oh peace, be still

In all his protest I brought out
A reason to trust God the more
Till sullenly he followed me
And we walked back along the shore
To minister as we could our best
And pray to God’s own hands the rest.
