Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday August 27, 2009

After struggling throughout life Eric Blair finally reached the bottom. He commented on the utter disillusionment he faced in the following:

"For two hundred years we had sawed and sawed and sawed at the branch we were sitting on. And in the end, much more suddenly than anyone had foreseen, our efforts were rewarded, and down we came. But unfortunately there had been a little mistake. The thing at the bottom was not a bed of roses after all, it was a cesspool full of barbed wire….It appears that amputation of the soul isn't just a simple surgical job, like having your appendix out. The wound has a tendency to go septic."

George Orwell commenting on the loss of religious faith in Europe that he had applauded.

The quote comes from the current issue of "Preacher Helps" published by Dr. Don Boys, former member of the Indiana House of Representatives. Eric Blair wrote the infamous book, "1984" using the pen name of George Orwell. That we are approaching the Orwellian dream/nightmare is obvious and already the deep dissatisfaction is showing.

I was struck by a phrase in Orwell's quote: "It appears that amputation of the soul isn't just a simple surgical job.."

In current politically correct thinking, the soul is out and humanism sans the soul is in. In attempting this emasculation of the soul from the human make up, we have what we are now witnessing; a culture of death rather than of life. Abortion, infanticide and euthanasia are common everyday words and are used dispassionately due to the brainwashed populace that in reality holds, "The only life worth anything is mine."

That individuals and humanity as a whole are wallowing in a despond is witnessed by your morning news, noon news and of course the evening version. The death laws of the great state of Oregon are textbook 101 for what is not only coming, but being mercilessly promoted by political persuasions of all shapes and sizes.

When the God to whom humanity answers is relegated to the realm of myth, the soul is excised from humanity, all that is left is a deep inner emptiness, with no hope or way to alleviate the soul pain that remains, even though its existence is vehemently denied.

Any observer of our passing scene must wonder, just how long before we hit bottom in "a cesspool full of barbed wire?"
