A Vapor

Most of us behave as if we will live forever, living only for the moment and giving little though to eternity. We put off living rightly because we think that we will have time to do things right later. But later never comes for it is always now. We must start living the right way right now. You never know when your life may end for our lives are “but a breath” that could vanish away at any moment. Even if you are young and think that you have your whole life ahead of you, remember, none of us guaranteed tomorrow and “you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. (James 4:14)”. And yet, what you do with your life is very important to God. He put you here with a purpose and a destiny and a particular spot in His plans. So why do we think that it’s okay to live for ourselves for most of our lives? If we will give an account for “every idle and careless word (Matthew 12:36)” how much more must we give an account for an idle, careless, and selfish life?

Everything that you have – from your life and talents to your money, spouse, and children – has been given to you by God to be used, managed, and invested in to God’s glory. We are to care for everything we have as if it belongs to God since it does. Do you have talents? We all do. Then develop them and use them to God’s glory. Do you have money? Then give at least a tenth back to God as He commands. Do you have a spouse? Then be the best partner you can be – supportive, caring, and giving – not selfishly demanding your own way. Do you have children? Then be the best parent you can be – loving and merciful, firm in discipline and constant in encouragement, that your children may come to know God and live for Him.

We need to be reminded sometimes of how brief this life is so that we can get refocused on the things that really matter – God, love, and eternity. We can get so wrapped up in daily life – bills that need paying, children not behaving, circumstances not cooperating. But remember that just like the distractions we pursue, these things will also be left behind someday. For in heaven not only is there “no more death, mourning, crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4), but also, everything is paid for ;-), everyone gets along, and there is never a dull moment. Things we should think about more often.

Point to Ponder

Are you living like you’ll never die? That is a dangerous thing to do for someday, “your soul will be demanded of you and then who will get what you have stored up for yourself?” (Luke 12:20). Do not put off getting things right with God for, “now is the time of God’s favor. Today is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2), and, “today if you hear His voice do not harden your heart.” (Hebrews 3:15). In what area of your life do you still act as if something were yours when everything you have belongs to God? Admit it to yourself and ask God to keep you reminded that everything comes from Him.

Let’s pray, “Lord, thank You for Your word which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalms 119:105). Thank You for the reminder through Your word that our life is short when compared to eternity. Help us remember how brief our time on earth will be and so let us begin to live completely for You starting with this day. Remind us that all that this world has to offer fades away and will be left behind someday but all that we do for You, in Your name and for Your glory will follow us to heaven (Revelation 14:13). As we live for You, in Your name and strive to live in a way that is pleasing to You, help us to not give up and not be discouraged when things don’t go the way we think they should. We know that You take care of us (Psalm 37:5) and that nothing in this life compares to the glory that will be revealed in us one day (Romans 8:18). Thank You that You are faithful to Your promise. In the name of Jesus Christ who died and was raised to life for us so that we might live for You (Romans 7:4), we pray. Amen.”
