Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday August 6, 2009
I recall this day 64 years ago. Actually the next day when the papers came out and my sister Vera tried to explain the nature of an atomic bomb. I was sure she knew as she was way up in Elementary School. I read the headline, but did not understand what I was reading.
The day which marked the final retribution for what President Roosevelt had called "The day of infamy" also marked the moment most students mark as the day of "the sobering realization that the world would never be the same again."
Due to the Atomic bombs used against Japan at Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan was called upon by Emperor Hirohito to "endure the unendurable" and surrender unconditionally to the Allied Forces.
The casualty figures from this action differ according to whom you happen to be reading after, but even the lowest is mind boggling. The account of deaths I have before me from the pen of William Bennett uses 140,000 deaths at Hiroshima and 70,000 at Nagasaki. The injuries have never been figured out with much accuracy.
A few years later I recall watching a film showing the devastation in Hiroshima, the film showed a person being vaporized. When the film was over the teacher instructed us that in case of a bombing attack by Korea or Russia we, the students whose brain was still in the oatmeal stage, were to get out of our seat and position ourselves under the desk for protection. I distinctly recall being sent to see our lovely principle due to my loud remark, "The teacher is nuttier than a fruitcake. Didn't she see how that bomb melted people?" For a few years I longed for the day when all citizens of America would have our own Atomic Bomb, so that we could fight back, in case the Army was busy elsewhere.
Things have changed since those infantile days. Now we Americans have a real since of security as we take comfort in knowing that mentally deranged megalomaniacs in the free world are doing all things possible to assure that nut cases in more backward countries do not develop nuclear weapons. I love the way Jimmy Carter pronounces nuclear.
In light of the devastation via Atomic weapons, Fulton Oursler author of "The Greatest Story Ever Told" posed the following:
"The Atomic Bombs dropped on Japan instantly killed 210,000 men, women and children. How many Atomic Bombs would it take to raise one of them from the dead?"
In several articles over the years I have used a verse to emphasize the awesome power of the Lord. John 11:43 "Lazarus, come forth." Just a word, God's Word is more powerful than the best man can offer.

Loved it, brother! If we only had His power back in the church, what a difference there would be! Then we would be the light and salt so needed in the world today. Keep telling them brother. God help us, in Jesus name I ask!
