Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday July 29, 2009

On July 29, 1918 Martin Treptow was killed fighting for America near Chateau-Thierry, France. He had been a barber in Iowa.

A diary was found on his body and on the flyleaf was a note titled:

My Pledge

America must win this war. Therefore I will work, I will save, I will sacrifice, I will endure, I will fight cheerfully and do my utmost, as if the issue of the whole struggle depended on me alone.

I found the "Pledge" in William Bennett and John Gribb's book, "The American Patriot's Almanac." You should get and read it.

That we who love America need Treptow's type of gritty commitment in this time is irrefutable. That Christians who love Christ and His church need this kind of gritty commitment is also irrefutable.

The days of let "George" do it have long faded into the mist of pleasant memories.

If our posterity is to dance to the tune of patriots and sing the song of Jesus, we, right now, must re-think our priorities and let the meaning of Martin's words sink into our mind, heart and feet. Well thought out thoughts followed with passionate action initiated by hearts on fire for Christ and this nation, which at one time, in our day, paid homage to the Son of God.

The prophesied times are upon us and it is ours to do "my utmost, as if the issue of the whole struggle depended on me alone."

Our generation has far too often depended on George, Uncle Sam and Big Brother so much so that all three are exhausted and in their fatigue are becoming tyrants. The hope of future generations in our country and in our churches is for us at this time to arise from our flowery beds of ease and make our time, talent and treasure count for the little ones coming along behind.

I am praying for the oratorical power to cause my readers give up asking; "What will "they" do next?" It doesn't matter what "they" will do. You are the one who matters most and you must, for the Lords sake state, "It is time for me step up."

It really is and in your heart you know it.
