Poetry
Have you ever had a moment, that's stopped you where you stand?
Sucked the breath out of your lungs, like water meeting sand.
A moment in your life-time that's brought you to your knees;
That's caused all of the thoughts that live inside your head to leave.
Have you ever felt your body sway as if you're going to fall?
Crushed and broken on the floor, pieces shattered small.
Trembling, shaking, shivering, mind completely blank,
Like everything you ever knew has emptied from the tank.
When something hits you harder than a cannonball in flight,
When something slams you to the floor, blurring up your sight,
When something you've just listened to, blows your mind away,
When all around you disappears, alone you stand, I say;
You are not even close, to the mystery of God,
The overwhelming story of His sacrifice; His cost.
The width, the length, the depth, the height of God's unending love,
Surpasses all that I could, even dream, that I'll know of.
That He gave His Son to me, to hang upon a tree.
That I chose to walk on by, pretending not to see.
I fled from Him, rejected Him, so many of my days,
But He loved me anyway, despite my sinful ways.
The fact that He now dwells within the fabric of my heart.
I'm rooted in His love, dug deep, with roots that won't depart.
And He loves me way beyond the love that I deserve.
For I'm a wretched man, under the mask that you observe.
It stops me where I stand; it brings me to my knees;
It slams me to the floor, and I can hardly breathe.
I'm overwhelmed by love; I'm overwhelmed by grace,
I'm overwhelmed that in this universe I have a place.
I close my eyes; I lift my head, for He made me an heir,
And freely I approach Him, to touch Him in my prayer.
To come with child-like attitude, to begin to understand,
And watch as all His riches, unfold, enlarge, expand.
To grasp the measure of whom He is, what He's truly like,
Is way beyond this poet's poor ability to write.
His wonder and His fullness, I scarcely can outline,
The detail of My God, so great, the detail, oh so fine.
The maker of this earth, this world, this universe we're in,
He's in this room, right now...
...and I'm overwhelmed again.
