Not Slaves to Fear

Once we were slaves, every one of us. We were slaves to sin and to the desires of our sinful nature. Jesus said, “anyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave does not belong to a family permanently, but a son belongs there forever. If the son sets you free then you will be really free. (John 8:36)”. God has set us free through Christ, as Scripture says, “we know that our old self was crucified with Him so that… we should no longer be slaves to sin… (Romans 6:6)” and by giving us His Holy Spirit, for Scripture also says, “where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. (2 Corinthians 3:17)”. Since we are now free from sin, having been ransomed by the precious blood of Christ, we can be free from fear – fear of death, of punishment, of the future and everything we can’t control. We have no reason to fear any longer. As God’s children we need not fear death since it is not final, we need not fear God and His judgment upon sin for we are now His children made righteous by the blood of the Lamb, and we need not fear what the future may bring for we know that God holds the future and us in His hands. For not only did God free us from our slavery to sin, but He also brought us into His family. He is our Father and He loves us very much, so we know that He will take care of us and we can rest in Him. He knows His plans for us and they are good, they are plans for our hope of the future (Jeremiah 29:11). God gives us His Holy Spirit to seal us and keep us and to comfort and reassure us with His presence. Because we have received God’s Holy Spirit, who lives in us, we have an intimate and loving relationship with the Father. The Spirit confirms this to us by producing fruit in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23) – by working in and through us.

Point to Ponder

Are you still living in fear? Still living in sin? If you have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and savior, then you can be set free from those things. For God did not give you a spirit of timidity, but of power (2 Timothy 1:7) and “greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. (1 John 4:4)”. Are you ready to be free from sin and to know for certain that you are God’s child?

Let us pray, “Our God, the only true and living God, we are so amazed by You. For You died to redeem us and by Your precious blood You freed us from sin and death. You have given us of Your Spirit that we may know You and be conformed to Your image. Be at work in us, Lord, and help us to follow You. Produce Your fruit in our lives that we might be certain that we are Yours. Help us to trust in You and reject fear. Thank You for making us Yours and for giving us Your Holy Spirit. Amen.”
