Larry Lilly’s Letter Monday July 13, 2009 For a few years I was blessed to the near Theophanic levels as was Abraham. While I did not receive pre-Incarnation appearances from the Deity with warning and the good news of things to come, I was blessed each Christmas time with a theological calendar.

The theologian that prepared the calendar has since quit making his grand contribution to the unwashed mass of humanity, but I find strength as I read again his offering for each day of the year from now well worn ones.

One tiny page, vintage 2002 shows a goofy looking man on a lake in a small boat. Above, storm clouds are threatening, now by the ferocious appearance, but the following words are actually spelled out by the Lord in the cloud formations:

"Hey! What are you looking at? You want trouble buddy, you found it."

The caption states: "Understanding only German, Fritz was unaware that the clouds were becoming threatening."

After all these years Gary Larson still gets a chuckle from me on this one. And the small part of me that is sane is glad that God in Christ speaks much plainer than the implication of the "Far Side" wisdom for the day in 2002. I admit that too many of His representatives are often more like Gary's parody of religious mumbo jumbo.

In spite of the jargon fancied by too many of the people religious God does speak the language that is understandable by mere humans. Contrary to misconception, God does speak human, and because of this did not come to earth to discover the vicissitudes of the human experience, but rather in order to accomplish salvation for us, and to demonstrate the divine model for humanity to live life to its true fullest. Mary informed all who want to know while attending the wedding in Cana that Jesus knew the heart of man. Sincere men and women spend a lifetime learning the grand heart of God.

In times of war, which is most of the time, the enemy is portrayed as subhuman and certainly beyond redemption, this is considered necessary. Else how could we ever enter into the fight to preserve our civilization? A photo of a heart broken woman holding the dead body of her child's ripped and torn body creates a tiny crack in our summation of her humanity and we in tiny baby steps begin to realize that language is not a barrier to God, for He speaks the universal tongue of the human heart through Christ. Words like compassion, even for the horrific Samaritan, in Jewish culture of the time viewed as the irreducible minimum, is seen as true blue human in need of redemption.

Communicating in a different tongue is tough. That's why God insists that the Good News of Christ is to be demonstrated as well as told. Ah, the demonstration.
