The Glimmering lights came softly pervading the night sky like twinkling lights gleaming good will.
She sat in her chair with her feet up supporting her body holding shooting pains. Cancer was the pervading guest in her home now.
The house was still and quiet. Her husband had gone for a walk to get the mail as he had routinely done for 30 years every afternoon. Laying her head against the back of the chair she tried to gain the peaceful promise she was assured with when the doctor announced the return of the dreaded disease. 'Be still and know that I am God’ came the whisper to her soul.
When breaking the news to her beloved children, she had lifted her index finger repeating out loud what her heavenly Father had told her. ’The doctor told me I had cancer throughout my body, and my comfort was ‘Be still and know that I am God’ she had said. She had announced it confidently like a stalwart soldier. She loved her children and grandchildren. They were the joy of her life; the youthful energy and love they gave her in return gave her great joy. She was a blessed woman.
The whispering promises came quietly now in the midst of her pain; her children and grand children did not come with such joyful countenances anymore but their eyes looked at the floor and at her with concerning looks. 'Hi Grandma' they said softly and out of character. They were so sad and resentful of the fact they couldn't open the door and rush into her arms, those steady loving arms giving them so much love.
She felt the steady boisterous lively waves of life replaced with flickering stars in the sky; quieter, sometimes winking down from the sky, but often hidden behind clouds.
'Cu-cu!' The Cu cu clock was announcing another afternoon was on its way. It was 1:00 pm. Hearing the footsteps of her beloved husband pad down the hallway she gave a smile. 'Back from the mail?' she asked. 'Yes' he said. He sat down on the couch and reclining the seat, settled on a news story. 'We're in for a thunderstorm' he said. 'I thought so' she said. 'I can feel it.'
He smiled as she said that. The arthritis housed in her bones served as a weather vane over the last few years.
'Would you like a cup of coffee?' he said. 'No, nothing hot, Gerrit. I would like some water.' 'Ok' he said getting up from his chair eager to serve his wife. She watched him leave the room saying a prayer of thanks to her Father for such a caring husband. He did everything for her and never missed a beat. He even was glad to cook for her, something she had always done for him her whole life. She was safe in his hands. Swallowing tears, she pushed back the thoughts of his future without her, possibly.
'Here you are, dear' he said handing her a glass of cool water. He leaned over her and kissed her, then walked over to the stereo set. Hymns by the Sea wafted through the room. 'Gerrit, could we go for a drive and see the Lake?' 'Are you sure?' He asked. 'Yes, I can manage' she said.
Two chairs were set up by the Lake. 'We're just in time. Would you just look at that sun set!' she said to her husband. 'It sure is a beauty' he said with a calm smile gazing at the round orange ball hovering over the horizon. He always had a bit of a smile on his face. He looked over at his wife and then at the sun setting. Neither of them said anything as they listened to the waves lapping against the rocks. 'It's getting a little chillier out now' he said. Walking over to the Caravan, he grabbed his wife's coat from the back seat. 'Would you like a sprite or a coke?' he asked. 'Yes, a sprite would be lovely.' she said. Putting her coat around her shoulders he went and fetched two sprites. 'Oh, that's nice' she said enjoying the cool soft drink by the lake.
