Devotionals
Growing up in the country, outside of Syracuse, N.Y., our family had a water well and water pump; but we also used a large cistern in our basement. Rain water was stored in the cistern for household use. Water from the well was hard water, needing the use of water softeners. The rain water from the cistern was wonderful for bathing, doing the laundry, and especially for washing our hair!
Our neighborhood also had a fresh water spring. Water from the spring was always clear and ice cold. Along the edge of the spring fresh wild spearmint leaves grew. We often picked some and chewed the leaves; then we drank the water. It was very refreshing; it does not get much better than that!
Jeremiah gives us special teaching about cisterns and how useless they are when broken. The bottom line is they can’t hold water! “For My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, to hew for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water (Jeremiah 2:13 NAS).”
God said His people abandoned Him, their source of fresh living waters in the foolish exchange for broken cisterns. We do not need to patch up the cracks of old leaking cisterns to quench our spiritual thirst. Drink from His fountain and find never ending refreshment!
