If you had told us a while back that a doctor from Pakistan would make a house call and perform a neurological exam on my husband, we wouldn’t have believed it. No way. Doesn’t make a bit of sense.

But now it makes perfect sense.

He’s working on his United States medical licensure. As our new friendship has progressed we’ve had the privilege to assist him and his family in many ways, including helping him practice medical office visits in order to prepare for a grueling eight-hour clinical exam in Chicago. My husband and I have taken turns being “patients” with various maladies while he’s honed skills and practiced English. This has been repeated many times in our home and one evening he performed a neurological exam on John.

A house call. From a Pakistani. How could our brains have conceived of such a thing?

Both the Old and New Testaments record examples of finite human minds wrestling with limited understanding and knowledge. In Luke 24 the two disciples who journeyed on the dusty road to Emmaus conversed and reasoned about the events surrounding the death of Jesus, yet mystery remained. But then the Lord Jesus drew near to them, “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” At meal-table, “Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him.”

In the Old Testament the Queen of Sheba traveled to Jerusalem to speak with Solomon about all that was in her heart and Solomon answered all her questions. “There was nothing so difficult for the king that he could not explain it to her.” (I Kings 10:3)

Like the Emmaus travelers and the Queen of Sheba, we’ll receive answers to all our questions at the end of our journey. Everything then will make perfect sense.

Our friend, by the way, passed his exam and John got a clean neurological bill of health!

“…she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.” (Matthew 12:42)
