Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday July 8, 2009
Throughout history humans have been fascinated by weapons, thinking there is lasting security in the latest most powerful brand. There was a certain amount of security in possessing the only atomic bomb, but others soon possessed their version and in the blink of an eye any sense of security was gone. It is as General Douglas McArthur stated, "There is no security on this earth, there is only opportunity."
In the realm of personal lasting victory it is good to know about "weapons" that are available to each of us if we truly want to live a life of inner peace and victory. These weapons are so simple and so rooted in a relationship with the Lord that I find it utterly amazing that so very few people even know what these weapons are, let alone have even a modicum of knowledge as to how to use them.
Leo Tolstoy stated:
"The two most powerful warriors are patience and time."
One of the problems at the root of our national problems is the refusal to exercise patience and demand instant gratification of our wants. By this practice we may have sold future freedom down the river and brought turmoil and emptiness to our souls.
While teaching His disciples about a coming time of trouble such as the world had never seen Jesus stated, out of the blue, in the midst of the teaching in Luke 21:19:
"In your patience possess ye your souls."
The teaching involved telling His folks they were going to be hated, betrayed by family members, and many of them would be killed. He gave them the key to inner peace in the midst of the world around them literally collapsing. A note in the margin of the Geneva Bible states the meaning of our Lord's words:
"Though you are surrounded on all sides with many miseries, yet nonetheless be valiant and courageous, and bear out these things bravely."
"Patience" as it is used basically means perseverance, a refusal to inwardly capitulate to circumstances and faithfully hold to faith in Christ. Tolstoy suffered and wrote of national and personal calamity and knew the key to survival as a whole person rather than simply a basket case that had been through troublous times was to know and call upon the two powerful warriors, patience and time.
I hope we can learn again the power of these warriors. Jesus assured us of their value.
