Birthdays Are A Joy

Birthdays are a reminder. they remind us that we were born on that day, they are a marker of where we are in life, a day to reflect on our lives, perhaps we count the years, celebrate them or want them to go away.

My grandmother Ruth always gave us grandkids an envelope, a birthday card and two dollars. I always looked forward to receiving the card because I felt remembered, my grandmother didn’t have much but she gave what she had. To me those two dollars will remain one of my most treasured gifts.

The joy of a birthday lays in the way a person views the day of their birth. So many horrible situations happen in our world today, abuse, drugs, hate, financial problems, marital problems, job loss and much more. A birthday is a day to put all of the horrible pieces of life back in the box and leave them there, nail the lid shut if you have to. Celebrate the day you arrived to participate in this journey called life, God for one is glad you are here and so are those who love you, they look forward to your smile, your voice; you can make their day better just by your presence.

Everything a person says or does affects the life of another, the next time someone you know has a birthday, take a moment to give them a smile, a greeting, a card, a piece of your heart to them on their day to bring a tiny bit of joy to their lives, even if they say, as my husband does, its just another day, deep down they are glad you remembered to wish them happy birthday.

I have made a list of simple birthday gifts anyone can do;

1. grandma Ruth’s birthday card with two dollars

2. call and sing happy birthday on their answering machine

3. hand make a simple gift or card

4. enjoying a birthday cake with friends or take them a cupcake

5. a quiet hassle free day

6. a hug

7. a bouquet of fresh picked wildflowers

8. a phone call

9. an email card

10. spark plugs

it is not about the gift, it is about sharing a tiny piece of your life with someone else, bringing them a moment of joy, the joy of Christ in you.
