There are hundreds of self-help books on the shelves today about self-awareness or self-discovery. More people take time off every year from their normal lives so that they can “find themselves.” In fact, it has even become somewhat of a joke that people going through a mid-life crisis are trying to find themselves – as though they misplaced who they are!

But it isn’t always a joke. True self-discovery is crucial to being comfortable in our own skins and is a key element of being a successful Christian. God wants us to understand ourselves, not in a selfish way, but in the sense that we must understand our place in His creation and His plan if we are too be fully appreciative of Him. We can’t know God without knowing ourselves, because we are His children!

Through the ages, many people have recognized this and prayed for the awareness to understand themselves better. St. Augustine asked God to guide him toward self-discovery centuries ago:

“Grant, Lord, that I may know myself that I may know Thee.”
St. Augustine

Self-discovery is about learning not only who you are, but what part you hold in God’s plan. He didn’t create you in order to simply take up space! He has a purpose especially for you, and until you go on the journey of self-discovery, you can’t understand what your role is. After all, how can you fulfill the destiny God has for you unless you know what gifts you can use to achieve that destiny? Just as important is the flip side of self-discovery – awareness of your faults. Knowing what causes you to stumble and fall is crucial to success in any endeavor, but never more so than when you are seeking God.

“The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.”
Psalm 119:130

“When you search for me, you will find me: if you seek me with all your heart.”
- Jeremiah 29:13

So self-discovery goes both ways – God can help you achieve it, and the more self-aware you are, the closer you can draw to God. How wonderful that God has created this unique dynamic for us!

Ask God Questions to Discover Your True Self

God will always be there when we come to Him with questions. He wants us to ask questions so that He can give us the right answers and guide us in the right paths, so don’t be afraid to ask when you’re seeking your true self.

* Why am I here?
* What do you want me to do with my life?
* What do you want me to learn?
* How do I overcome my fears, self-doubts and insecurities?
* What steps do I need to take to further understand myself and God?

All of the questions above can be taken to God in prayer. Whenever you talk to God, you learn a bit more about yourself. You can discover ways to overcome your flaws when you lay them down before Him. You can understand better how to use the gifts He has given you and will be able to manage them better.

When you begin the journey of self-discovery through God, never be afraid of what you find out about yourself! God made you distinctive for a reason! Finding out what that reason is and following the plan God has for you is the greatest form of self-discovery there is !
