Larry Lilly's Letter Monday June 22, 2009

In doing some research for an article to be published later in the year in Larry Lilly's Journal, the hard copy snail mail flag ship of this ministry I accumulated a wealth of material that is great, but not on target for the piece. I share one gem from this mass of thought provoking information.

Daniel. Yep, that Daniel of the Lion's Den fame, the very mention of his name causes fear and trembling in any Lion's Pride.

Daniel was carried away as a captive to Babylon while in his early teens and lived in Babylon as a slave/servant for about 73 years as a high ranking slave, but a prisoner nonetheless. Babylon was the most powerful nation on earth at the time, and yet Daniel, the prisoner of several world rulers was a vastly superior man.

In all likely hood Daniel was incapable of fatherhood for several reasons, was very well educated in the things of The Lord God of Israel prior to his captivity and during his incarceration at the palace used his God given graces to bloom where he was planted.

From the earliest mention of Daniel as a young teen,(13-15) the courage of his convictions leaps off the page. He graciously refused to eat the sumptuous food from the Kings table, but asked, gave reasons for the asking, and trusted God for a positive outcome and ate only simple pulse, said by some to be boiled Cannabis seeds according to an older article in Britannica. It is beyond question that in his way Daniel was more courageous than his captors. He had the courage to reason when his head was on the line.

The intelligence quotient of Daniel was off the scale. It was said of him, by his captors that the wisdom of God dwelt in him. Daniel invested 73 years of his life proving them correct. While many of the men God has used since the creation were/are not men of years of formal education, it is undeniable that they were and are men/women of great intelligence, though all societies have called such humans ignorant and unlearned. Yet myriad are the PhD religious scholars who would struggle to carry a "Spurgeon's Bible."

That Daniel was a spiritual giant is given. In the dark midnight of captivity he shined as a bright star and shed light on world events far into the future.

Daniel was a man of unique courage, integrity, intelligence and deep spirituality.
