A Kenyan Sunrise

The serrated edge of a mountain range slices through
Supple hues of charcoal, cherry and tangerine.
Ribbons of amethyst and plum are woven gently into the horizon.
One procrastinating star gives a final cheeky to wink the earth.

Flora of exotic species form mysterious black shapes.
Some are waiters with trays held high to serve the heavens,
Some are ladies dressed in back taffeta escorted by lords in top hats.
They blissfully waltz and bow to each other in the thick warm breezes.

An amber disk peeks over the apex of the mountaintop
Melting bands of pink, into pools of simmering gold and silver.
A hush falls across the land, as earth strains to hear songs of angels.
Croaking voices of frogs and singing insects are muted; time freezes.

The universe holds her breath in the deafening silence.
A cock disturbs earth’s meditation with a boasting trumpet call.
The land stirs with awkward movements and slowly she awakes.
Joyfully, sing praises to GOD for it is the birth of a new dawn in Kenya.
