The Songs
Psalm 36:5-10 – Unlimited Love
Key Verses: (NIV)

• 5: “For your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.” – The preceding verses in this psalm discuss the wickedness of man with nothing to keep them from their evil ways but God who is loving, benevolent, and faithful.
  
  
• 6b: “O LORD, you preserve both man and beast.” – God cares for all creatures in His creation.
  
  
• 7: “How priceless is your unfailing love!” – Nothing compares to the love that God has for each of us.
  
  
• 9: “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.” – God’s love flows unceasingly like a fountain, bringing life to all.
  
  
• 10: “Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart.” – This prayer asks that God continues to bless those who follow Him.
  

Points to Contemplate:

• Consider the magnitude of God’s love. Does His love stretch throughout all levels of your life? Do you experience His faithfulness everywhere you look? Is His righteousness clearly visible and mightily before you like a mountain peak? Have you allowed His justice to fill every aspect of your soul? If these traits of God fill the universe, should they not also completely permeate every aspect of your life?
  
  
• How priceless is God’s love? Can you place a value on God’s love? Can you compare it to other types of love? Does love and acceptance from friends and family mean more to you than knowing that God loves you? If not, why do we seemingly spend so much time seeking love? Why are we focused on our approval-rating among our peers? If God’s love is priceless, should it also be sufficient for our needs? Do we need to seek love and affection from anyone but God?
  
  
• Is God your “fountain of life?” In what ways have you experienced God’s life-giving light? Has He reached into a darkness of sin or despair and recreated in you new hope where once there was none? Does His gift of Grace sustain you during any challenge that you face? Does He burst forth with inspiration and moments of epiphany to open your heart and mind to His way? Does the life of Jesus as a teacher provide you with a framework for which to live your life? Does His death humble you? Are you saved by His resurrection? Is God your “fountain of life?”
  
  
• Do you know God? David prays in this psalm that God continue to bless those who know Him. Have you sought out God and have you come to know Him? Do you feel His love and righteousness filling your heart as a result? C. S. Lewis wrote that many people prefer an impersonal God. That in seeking Him they do not know what to do when they find Him.¹ Are you seeking a relationship with a personal God? Do you truly expect to find Him? Or do you pull back from getting too close? Are you ready to accept all the love that He has available for you?
  

Promise of the Gospel:

David wrote this psalm to celebrate the wonders of God’s love in the lives of those who choose to follow Him. Today’s verses contrast the amazing properties of God’s love versus the types of failings we find in man. Do we focus on the selfish love of man instead of the selfless love of God; on limited love compared with unlimited love? When we turn to God, when we really get to know Him as our personal Lord and Savior, He becomes our “fountain of life.” All things that we need come to us as a result of His priceless and unfailing love. When we reach out to know Him the heavens are as unable to contain our joy as they are to limit His love.
