"Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, `Who is the LORD?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God." (Proverbs 30:08-09)
King Lemual's prayer is a challenge to all of us. He asks for his "daily bread", not too much or too little, not because of his concern about his savings account, but because of his concern for his relationship with the Lord. It is a matter of his faith, not his pocketbook. Can we truly ask for our "daily bread"? Our society puts a lot of pressure on us to be concerned about "tomorrows bread" or maybe even "next year's bread". Jesus said in His model prayer that we should pray, "give us this day our daily bread". Why all of this advice about "daily bread"? Because "daily bread" requires faith, and we humans seem to want anything except faith. We would rather trust in our savings accounts, or our material comforts than to have to exercise faith. We all need to pray for faith. Yes, I mean both you and me
