No, not by cell phone—the conventional way.
"I have a question," he said, in a voice gentle, yet pressing.
"An issue", he stressed, "that needs addressing."
Startled by his voice, I spilled my $4 latte
On the designer shirt my sister had bought me.
As I wiped my silk top in frantic frustration,
The Spirit continued without hesitation.
"Do you know that what you need to be pleased
Can't be found in the mall or on HDTV?
Are you aware that genuine peace of mind
Is found in the things of the spiritual kind?
Knowing Jesus is far more precious than gold--
More valuable than diamonds or riches untold!"
I knew he was right, but running ten minutes late
I burst out of the coffee shop like a horse from the gate.
As I raced in my car to work downtown,
I turned up the CD player with stereo sound.
But the Spirit’s words sat heavy in my heart,
And I pulled into the parking lot at a nearby park.
With new-found conviction, I dropped to my knees.
(It was easy to do in my big SUV.)
“Lord, help me to remember as each moment goes by—
In every breath that I take, in each footprint of time--
That the things of this world will soon pass away,
But you are the same yesterday and today!
Only you hold the key to lasting satisfaction--
Lord, keep me from all this endless distraction!
From now on, may my treasure be laid up
Where moths and rust cannot corrupt.
And may each earthly treasure you bestow upon me,
Be less precious than your gift of eternity.”
I smiled as I pulled back on to the road.
My coffee was empty, but my heart was full.
